Photography At Home | Chicago Family Photographer
Yes, I have a studio located in downtown Naperville, but that doesn’t mean all my clients live in Naperville. I have clients all over Chicago, and while they usually come out to me, I will also go out to them, too. Being a family photographer means having conversations about the style, vibe, look, and setting of the session. On occasion, I get a request to come to someone’s home and do the session there. I admit that I am always nervous about going to a house. I never know what’s in store for me. Is it going to be something that works for a photograph? Will there things in the line of sight? The sun in their eyes?
But all was well on this day! They had a beautiful front door without the sun hitting their eyes. And, of course, I always love when people include their dogs for a family photoshoot. Don’t you love how their outfits coordinate with the mums in the front garden area? We kept to the front yard which actually offered plenty of options for both family and individual pictures.
And when photographing the three kids, I wanted them to each showcase their own personalities and not be in the exact same spots. When you think about pictures at home, be sure that what you envision doesn’t show your neighbor’s homes, or cars parked nearby.
Then we moved around to the side of the home which had this beautiful gate. Keeping a very shallow depth of field helped to keep the background nice and soft without being a distraction.
At the very end, the sun had moved enough for us to change spots and get the beautiful late fall colors in the background. People rarely think about the sun when they think about how beautiful their yard or porch are for pictures, but it is the most important factor.
I will never photograph people with the sun in their eyes, so be sure to go outside during the time of day you might have your session and look around then. Heck, go and take pictures from the vantage point of the photographer to show your photographer, so they know what to expect. Your home is an important aspect of your life, so why not create lasting memories that include it?
