Special Needs Photography
Ever since opening my studio, I have offered special needs mini sessions every April in honor of Autism Awareness Month. Photographing special needs kids has been a part of my journey and career from the very beginning, and it continues to be the most rewarding part of my year!
Every April, I offer two dates. One is done in studio, where I decide on the background each year. I try to vary it year to year. On this year, I went with a dark neutral, and I loved it! But I also offer a second date which is for outdoors. Depending on the child, some do better in one setting over the other, and I want to make this a successful experience for everyone.
While these sessions are only 20 minutes long, it is plenty long enough for some great family, as well as individual pictures. I have so much fun working with each family, figuring out what gets smiles and eye contact (if possible).
I also don’t force anything. If someone doesn’t want to sit on a chair, then I’m not going to make them. If they want to spin in circles, go for it! I meet children where they are at. I want them leaving having had a positive experience.
Usually it is the parents who are the most stressed, and I get it. I do! But take a deep breath and let it go. I’ve got you.
The timing of this is perfect, as I have announced the dates for this year’s special needs mini sessions! I will be having them in studio on Saturday, April 5 and outdoors on Sunday April 27. These sessions are significantly discounted with no minimum order requirement. If you have a special needs child or a friend or family with one, please let them know about our offering.
