Oh my, this little guy has quite the story. First off, he is simply gorgeous and sweet as can be….but it didn’t start off that way. He had a traumatic and scary birth story that broke my heart. But after being in the NICU for seven days, he was pronounced healthy and good to go. When I first met him, his dad walked in and looked like a zombie. I can say this because I had met them during their maternity session and already knew them. The man who walked in the door this time was a seriously sleep deprived man at his wit’s end. They told me the baby was only calm when nursing or sound asleep. He was very fussy. I’m very good with babies and have lots of experience, so I tried my best to get him calm. He had an obvious need to suck, and was desperately trying to suck on his arm and hand, but refused the pacifier. After two and a half hours, I had only been able to take a few pictures. I asked if we could come back in a couple days and try again. Now, it sucks to have to reshoot. I know it is horribly inconvenient for the new parents, and I don’t want to do it, either. But every time I’ve done it, the second round is awesome. I was hoping that would be the case with this little guy. I sent them home with instructions to go buy every brand of pacifier they could find because if they could get him to suck on one, I was certain he would be happier – and thus, the parents would be happier, too.
So fast forward two days later, in walks the original dad I had met during the maternity session. They both looked rested and happy. “We found a pacifier!” And the baby was a totally different baby. He was calm and perfect the ENTIRE time. I’m so happy that this family got to have a positive experience with their newborn session. The way it should be. And I’m even happier that they are now able to enjoy this sweet boy.
Could he be any more beautiful?
It’s hard to believe this was the same baby as the fussy guy I had only two days earlier. Never underestimate the need of many newborns to suck.
Grandma was with us for this second session, and she made the request to have a picture with the baby’s feet. I thought, how precious to have a picture of her daughter’s hands holding the baby feet.
They are also big Chicago Blackhawk fans. They have an adorable little signed jersey and brought along a blanket and little knit hat and diaper cover and wanted to do something with them. I’m happy with the end result!
