Welcoming This Sweet Little Guy | Naperville Newborn Photography

There’s something magical about welcoming a new life into the world—and being able to photograph those earliest days is a joy I never take for granted. This sweet baby boy came into the studio just under two weeks old, and his session was full of tender moments, thoughtful styling, and the kind of peaceful expressions that melt your heart.

We started with a cozy setup in a deep, dusty blue—a color his parents specifically requested because it’s one of the main tones in his nursery. I always love when families incorporate personal touches like that. It helps create a sense of connection between the images and the space where they’ll be displayed. And having the cozy outfit match the background perfectly just helps the eye go straight to his beautiful skin, making those tiny features stand out.

Next, we shifted to a muted sage green with a waffle-knit wrap and soft textures. Green is another one of the nursery colors, and the combination with this little knit bonnet gave everything a dreamy, organic feel. He was so content during this portion of the session—just a peaceful little bundle, happy to be swaddled up and surrounded by warmth.

But we don’t just focus on baby during these newborn sessions. Parents opt to be in pictures about half the time, but when there is an older sibling, parents definitely want to have a beautiful portrait to hang on the wall.  When the sibling is a young toddler, we have to think about safe poses. In some, she did have him lying in her lap, but this is my favorite image with their beautiful daughter – just look at those curls!!

I try to only do a few prop images per newborn sessions since we spend so much time soothing the baby and getting him back to sleep, and then also add the time to change outfits and setups, it adds up. But here is another prop image we did with him being all boy. Just waiting to get big enough to go fishing with daddy.

And then what a treat! For a brief moment, he opened his eyes and looked right at the camera. Ok, newborns don’t actually “look” at anything, but I was able to wait for that brief moment when his eyes passed by me, making it look like he was actually looking at the camera. It doesn’t happen often with newborns, since they spend so much of the session snoozing, so when we catch an alert gaze like this, it feels like a little gift.

We wrapped up with this sweet, pose – one that is frequently requested by parents. I never guarantee it, though, as not all babies will tolerate it or be deep enough asleep to let me pose them on their elbows like this. This image feels timeless to me. It’s one I can imagine printed large in their home, a quiet reminder of just how small and perfect he was in those early days.

Welcoming this little boy into the studio was a joy, and I loved getting to design his session around the palette and mood his parents envisioned. These are the kinds of sessions that remind me why I do what I do  – documenting love, new beginnings, and all the fleeting moments in between.
