Photographs have been the single most important way to connect with our past, especially with past generations. You look back at pictures of your grandparents and realize, “I have her nose!” We see joy and pain. We get to look back on the biggest moments of a life, and also random ones. But when we look back on ourselves or our families, what we really want to see (beyond a beautiful picture) is an essence of that person. When you look at pictures of your teenager as a baby, and you see them all pudgy and smiling, it evokes a memory of that time. You can almost hear the baby giggles.
Photographs are not merely a way to visually document your lives. It is a touchstone for emotion, as well.
When I photographed this beautiful high school senior, one of the questions I had was about her interests and passions. She loved to read. I don’t know why people don’t realize a quiet and small passion is no less beautiful when it comes to images! I absolutely loved how this one turned out!
It was spring in Chicago, which is really not a pretty season for us. We don’t get leaves until the very end of April, but that didn’t stop us.
One of the best parts of doing senior pictures is making sure to capture the many different sides of these young adults. They are silly, and serious. Quiet and boisterous. They are everything about to explode.
Man, I had forgotten about this session (it was a while ago), and I forgot how beautiful she was! She rocked the serious expressions but came alive with her smile.
They are both the real her, and when her parents look at these while she is away at school, I hope they can hear her voice through them.
I hope her future children look at these and know her.
