Oh my, but this was an awesome session!!  First off, I loved this family the first time I photographed them a few years ago.  I couldn’t believe when I saw them again this past winter at one of my mini-sessions, or that their eldest son is now a senior at Nequa Valley High School!  Time flies by so fast.  But the main reason this was such an awesome senior session was that Ethan plays bass.  That is a cool instrument right there, and I knew I wanted to do something cool with it.  As I’m talking with the parents about possible locations and setting to use it in, dad pipes up that his company has the coolest location ever (he isn’t lying) at 5th Avenue Station.  For those that don’t know 5th Ave Station used to be the actual train station with boilers and everything from a hundred years ago.  Then it was converted to several things over the years.  I remember going there when it was a restaurant with the cool double story boiler there.  Well, now this IT company is there and they kept that actual antique boiler room cover.  And the rest of the office was equally as amazing!  This is definitely one of my all time favorite sessions, too bad I can’t do a repeat for anyone else!

So that is not a backdrop behind him, but actual metal.  The bass was not enhanced in any way, but with everything being so monochromatic, it just popped under my lights.  I also want to mention his suit.  When parents want their boys to wear suits, don’t think boring.  Suits are straight up hot!  At least, they should be.

Right outside that first area was the smoke stack, which are the bricks curving behind him. And check out that awesome floor!

Of course, we had to get some great closeups, as well.  In one hallway, there were actual barnwood planks…as in antique wood.  It was a photographer’s dream.

Then we went outside into the cold for just a couple pictures.  I love how GQ he looks here.

He definitely looks ready to head off to college in the fall to Western Michigan University!  Good luck, Ethan!  And I hope you get to bring along your bass.  🙂
