Naperville Family Photographer, Downers Grove Photographer | Ahead of the Storm

With the unpredictable weather we have had this spring and summer, I have to look at the forecast every hour.  And this day was no exception.  Storms were in the forecast for the early evening, but they were supposed to be scattered, so we decided to try and hope for the best for this family portrait session.  You see, they wanted to commemorate their little family of three before they become a family of four in just a few more months.  I hadn’t seen the little one for a year, so it was great to see her.  She still has the absolute best lips ever.  Seriously, even as a newborn I commented on them!

So, when they arrived, it was definitely cloudy, and you could tell rain was coming.  I tried to go as fast as possible with a toddler, as we knew the storm was going to hit, but we were up for the gamble.  I assured them that I can make pictures “sunny” even though the reality was a very dark day.  And it was getting darker by the minute.  But you would never know.

As I was taking the above picture, one of the park rangers came and told us lightning had been sighted, and we should start heading back to the parking lot.  Well, we decided to slowly head back, snapping a few more when it got SERIOUSLY dark.  It became “I hope we can make it to our cars before we get dumped on”.  The sky was becoming eerily colored and the wind began whipping.  Thankfully, we made it to our cars before the sky opened up, but I didn’t make it out of the parking lot before it was a total downpour with high winds.  By the time I was in my own neighborhood, some streets were even flooded out.  Crazy, crazy session.  But so glad we were able to get what we did.
