Megan – A.K.A. kid wrangler
Well I had a new experience this evening. I was lucky enough to get to tag along with Todd Pierson of Pierson Studios on a commercial test shoot. I would love to eventually break into the commercial industry and sell my images for advertising purposes and already have some things in mind, but it is a whole other world than doing retail portraits. I stumbled upon Todd by accident and was impressed with the vibrancy of his work and noted that, like me, he also works mostly with kids – though my clients tend to be younger than his.
Todd not only does still photography for commercial sale, but has broken into video as well, so today was a lesson in movement. The main characters were two 9-yr old girls, and I was in charge of watching the light on them with diffusers and reflectors. I also got to be a kid wrangler and coach them on their acting and timing. It was pretty fun! This all took place not far from where I grew up, so the girls were thrilled that I went to the same elementary school that they go to. I learned that I have plenty in common with 9 year old girls. LOL
Then for the scenes with a group of about 10 kids – all running and being crazy. This was as chaotic as it sounds, and an old ability resurfaced for me – the ability to finger whistle loudly in order to get a bunch of talkative kids to listen. LOL
In all, it was a fun, tiring, and enlightening evening. Thanks to Todd for letting me tag along!
